Truth about Human cloning | Latest News | 4k

Published

Human cloning is the creation of a genetically identical copy (or clone) of a human. The term is generally used to refer to artificial human cloning, which is the reproduction of human cells and tissue. It does not refer to the natural conception and delivery of identical twins. The possibility of human cloning has raised controversies. These ethical concerns have prompted several nations to pass laws regarding human cloning and its legality.

In England he worked with Professor Michael Fischberg for his D Phil at University of Oxford along with John Bertrand Gurdon to do pioneering research on nuclear transplantation and cloning, that now are recognised for potential stem cell and other medical applications. In his path breaking research he could induce successful nuclear transplantation and polyploidy in fish Stickleback, Gasterosteus aculatus, that was reported in the prestigious scientific journal Nature. Prof. John Bertrand Gurdon used the same technique on the frog, Xenopus under Prof Michael Fischberg at Oxford and was later awarded the Noble Prize in 2012 for the discovery that mature cells can be reprogrammed to become pluripotent. It was the pioneering work to induce polyploidy and the successful cloning of fish and frog respectively by Dr H. Swarup and Dr J. Gurdon using intact nuclei from the somatic cells as an extension of the work of Briggs and King in 1952 on transplanting nuclei from the embryonic blastula cells that was then internationally acclaimed. The British Scientist, Dr. J.B.S. Haldane hailed the work of Dr Har Swarup for its potential medical applications and in describing the results, became one of the first to use the word “clone” in reference to animals. Once Dr. Haldane wrote to Prof. Hickling who was looking for a cytogeneticist that Dr Har Swarup was the best cytogenetist he could get in whole of England. His simple technique for production of polyploidy by hot and cold shock made him so famous that he was invited to demonstrate it at several places like Oxford and Cambridge Universities, and at the then recently set up Marine Biological Station at Plymouth. Sir Ronald Fisher and Professor C.D. Darlington made special mention of Professor Swarup’s technique at International Genetical Conference at Oxford to be later invited by Hamburg University, Germany, Tribhuvan University, Nepal and Karachi University, Pakistan. His work opened a new vista for the development of other breakthrough technologies and is widely quoted even today in almost all standard textbooks on biotechnology and genetics.

Dolly was cloned by Keith Campbell, Ian Wilmut and colleagues at the Roslin Institute, part of the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and the biotechnology company PPL Therapeutics, based near Edinburgh. The funding for Dolly’s cloning was provided by PPL Therapeutics and the Ministry of Agriculture. She was born on 5 July 1996 and died from a progressive lung disease five months before her seventh birthday.

The cell used as the donor for the cloning of Dolly was taken from a mammary gland, and the production of a healthy clone therefore proved that a cell taken from a specific part of the body could recreate a whole individual. On Dolly’s name, Wilmut stated “Dolly is derived from a mammary gland cell and we couldn’t think of a more impressive pair of glands than Dolly Parton’s”.

Identical long-tailed macaques Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua were born several weeks ago at a laboratory in China.

Scientists say populations of monkeys that are genetically identical will be useful for research into human diseases. But critics say the work raises ethical concerns by bringing the world closer to human cloning.

Qiang Sun of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Neuroscience said the cloned monkeys will be useful as a model for studying diseases with a genetic basis, including some cancers, metabolic and immune disorders.

How NeuroTechnology is Changing Our Lives

Published

Who among us anticipated that in 2015 we would be talking through our steering wheels while driving? From the basic ways we communicate to how we pay bills and make purchases, technology is transforming our lives. Add neuroplasticity, the scientific discovery that our brains change throughout our lives, to the mix, and what lies ahead becomes even more interesting.

Zack Lynch, Chairman and Founder of the Neurotechnology Industry Organization, will present his vision for the future and will moderate a conversation with:

Jen Hyatt, founder of Great Britain’s Big White Wall, a company that provides a 24/7 safe online community of people who are anxious, down or not coping, guided by trained professionals.

Corey McCann, MD, PhD, founder of Pear Therapeutics, a company that combines digital therapies with supplements, medical foods and pharmaceuticals to create more effective treatment solutions.

Jocelyn Faubert, PhD, whose laboratory at the University of Montreal has yielded technologies that led to the launch of CogniSens, a neurotechnology company that specializes in measuring, identifying and improving neurobiological activity, whose practical applications are used for attention training, in the identification of mild perceptual impairment related to a variety of illnesses, and by professional sports teams and elite military forces.

Professor Merryn Tawhai – Digital Breaths: The benefits of bioengineering (2018)

Digital breaths: The benefits of bioengineering

An aging population and increase in people living with chronic disease calls for new approaches to reduce healthcare costs and improve patient outcomes. Recent advances in imaging, sensor, and communications technologies, combined with innovative bioengineering approaches, has the potential to revolutionise healthcare. However, does New Zealand have the capability to become a world leader in this industry?

Professor Merryn Tawhai explains how each stage of this multi-disciplinary process, from a science discovery through to the applied science and then clinical research, are each critical to developing both technology and devices that can reduce the burden of chronic disease. Merryn’s own research advances computer modelling of the human lung in search of better methods to diagnose and treat lung disease, particularly in the older generation.

About the speaker:
From a keen interest in biology and mathematics in her youth, Professor Merryn Tawhai is now the Director of the Medical Technologies Centre of Research Excellence (MedTech CoRE) and Deputy Director of the Auckland Bioengineering Institute at University of Auckland.

At the 2016 New Zealand Research Honours, Merryn was awarded the MacDiarmid Medal by Royal Society Te Apārangi for her research to create anatomically detailed models of the respiratory system. The medal is awarded for outstanding scientific research that has the potential for human benefit, and the models created by Professor Tawhai provide new tools for diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of lung disease.

This talk was held at Royal Society Te Apārangi in Wellington on Thursday 21 June and was proudly presented in partnership with the Auckland Bioengineering Institute of University of Auckland and the Medical Technologies Centre of Research Excellence (MedTech CoRE).
