Nuclear Waste: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

Published

on

Nuclear waste poses a serious threat to public health if it’s not stored in a safe place. John Oliver explains why the United States desperately needs to build a metaphorical toilet for all that waste.

most nuclear waste is just building material and old safety clothing ans stuff like that.
with the actual nuclear by products they could be depleted to where they are relativly safe to dispose of using the proper reactor technology

Admittedly the US has rubbish geology for normal long term storage.

Also keep in mind you cant label all nuclear power as unsafe since the sin is basically a big fusion reactor in space… we really need to develop newer safer nuclear power and be less paranoid about nuclear power…

After all if you protest nuclear power your more likely to just block new replacement plants that would be safer forcing older reactors to keep operating which is a problem and more likely to become unsafe.

Also nuclear by products are vital for many medical devices we use now days.

"Nazis – the thing that all Americans agreed were bad at the time". That sentence should not need "at the time". They're still bad, and should not be suddenly socially acceptable just because some bitchy racists don't like their feelings hurt.

We need to start reprocessing the nuclear waste, which involves extracting usable uranium out of the waste and re using it. Sadly, the U.S. stopped doing it after they discovered that burying it is cheaper. I believe they still reprocess it in Europe.

"WhatExpertsSayIsHighlyUnlikely, if a Fukushima like accident happens at one of those, the results could be highly catastrophic."

    That seems a little disingenuous…

  27. Karl Johanson

    November 21, 2017 at 1:19 am

The UN estimates that the smoke from fossil fuels and renewable biomass energy kills around 7.5 million people every year. (That's just from the smoke, that's not including fires and explosions and other accidents.) That's more deaths EVERY 15 SECONDS than from 3 melt downs at Fukushima, and the number would be substantially higher without nuclear energy.

  28. Karl Johanson

    November 21, 2017 at 1:20 am

Spent nuclear fuel is less radioactive than some grades of Uranium ore in less than a thousand years, while the Cadmium and Arsenic in some solar cells is toxic forever.
Around 1.8 billion years ago natural nuclear reactors went critical at Oklo in Gabon, Africa for quite some time. Thousands of pounds of plutonium was produced. The produced plutonium barely migrated through the rock it happened to be formed in. This in spite of the plutonium being unclad, uncontained, unvitrified, not packed in bentonite clay. In spite of the area being tectonically unstable, and in spite of the rock being fractured, and in spite of boiling water flowing over the plutonium as it formed for around half a million years. The spent nuclear fuel should be handled with care, but Oklo shows us that it isn’t that big of a technological challenge.

  29. Karl Johanson

    November 21, 2017 at 1:34 am

The longer spent nuclear fuel is kept out of repositories, the more likely it is that it will eventually be recycled. No biggy as spent fuel sitting in pools on the surface hasn't hurt anyone. Meanwhile solar pool covers kills hundreds.

Though over the years, I love John Oliver, this is a completely uninformed piece. Th reason I respond here in because peaceful nuclear power is important for a 100% emissions free decarbonization of the economy. We need to make a smart decision, on what is a powerful source of emissions free energy. Here's a rational response to John Oliver's irrational comedy trope. The show should be called: how white people are trying to kill everyone including themselves all the time. Hosted by a man who looks like he might be responsible for the whole thing and why we know what to do but have decided not to for a stupid reason. Or maybe white people and why they should be banned from doing things but Dont mention that every where else is doing a much worse job and we live in a good bit.

This Is The BIGGEST Mystery Found By Accident…

Description:

It’s kind of amazing that we’re sitting here in the year 2018, yet new discoveries about the planet still manage to surface every day. Some include newly undiscovered places or animals that no one has ever seen or documented before. And that is exactly what we’re talking about here today on Top 5 Supreme. Today’s video is called This is the Biggest Discovery Found By Accident! So sit back, relax, and prepare learn something new today! Before we get started with today’s video don’t forget to click the bell to get notified every single day with the best Top’s you’ll ever see. Also, don’t forget to subscribe to this channel. So let’s get rolling!

#5 Large Skull

Imagine having your own farm and one day discovering that your land is the exactly location where an ancient animal lost his life? That’s exactly what happened to this soy bean farmer in Michigan. James Bristle made this crazy discovery recently. One day he saw something sticking out of the ground. On first thought, he imagine it was probably some time of fence post. But, it wasn’t. After getting a team to dig deeper into the land he found out that his land was the proud owner of an ancient wooly mammoth skull that was completely intact! This animal lived here 15000 years ago. Wow.

#4 Potato Chips

So, how many of you love to eat potato chips? I expect to see everyone’s hand raised right now, by the way. Anyway who knew that potato ships were actually an accidental creation? In 1853 a chef in New York accidentally created the tasty treat when an annoying customer kept sending back his French fries because they were too soggy. So the chef, in an attempt to be funny, sliced his next batch of potatoes extra thin and drowned them in salt. To the chefs surprise though, the customer actually loved the new creation. And thus, potato chips were born! Pretty cool huh? Actually, I’m pretty hungry and could go for some chips right now. Oh, never mind. Moving on.

#3 Weird Wishes

Around 50 years ago a farmer in china wanted to build a new well on his land. So, he sat out with the proper tools and began digging into the ground. However instead of finding water, he found something pretty crazy, and kinda cool. What he found was over 80,000 – yes, I said 80,000 – perfectly preserved statues of ancient generals and warriors. It turned out to be the burial sight of an ancient general, and the fact that all of these were found relatively unharmed is a sign that he was a general of great distinction and respect. One more cool fact is that the general was only 13 years old when he ordered the construction of the statue army. 13!

#2 Voynich Manuscript

The Voynich Manuscript is one of the most bizarre discoveries ever made. The codex, or book, is written in some kind of alien code that not one person has been able to decipher. Found in 1912, it was discovered that the book was actually written in the 15th century. The contents of the book are pretty crazy – otherworldly animals, alien coding and nude women doing all sorts of crazy stuff can be found throughout it. The book is so unusual that the language that was used to fill the book is still yet to be deciphered. The scientists and researchers who’ve studied the writings within are all stumped to this day, leading some to believe that the entire thing is just a hoax. But, for what purpose? Others believe it was dropped here, a long, long time ago, by some kind of alien beings. Whatever it is, here’s to hoping that the writings are deciphered sooner than later.

#1 $2M Penny

How much are the pennies in your pocket worth? Probably just 1 cent. Like normal. But what if I told you about a penny that was actually worth about $2 million? Check this out. Robert Lawrence was the son of a guy that worked in the US mint. After his father passed Robert took over his coin collection that was just sitting in a little sandwich bag. One of the pennies in the bag – an all aluminum penny that was only 1 of 10 ever made – was originally believed to be worth about $300. But after a little more research it was actually discovered that it was worth $2M. That’s crazy!
