New JWST Launch Date, Budget Set By NASA

In this episode, the verdict is in. After reading and responding to the independent review of the James Webb Space Telescope mission, NASA announced today a new launch date and an updated cost analysis. It looks like JWST will launch on March 30, 2021 and will cost an additional billion dollars, bringing the total cost of the mission to 9.5 billion dollars.

I'm finding myself having mixed feelings about James web. I love Astronomy, but I've volunteered in a food kitchen. I've seen the suffering of others in my life, and 9 billion could sure build some homes and put food in a lot of hungry bellies. If it was my money, even loving physics and astronomy as much as I do, my conscience wouldn't allow me to spend it on a telescope. Of course my Conscience and opinion are worth less than the change in my couch, but there they are.

Sounds about right, a billion to replace those screws that fell out on the floor, and another two years to screw them back in. This is getting insane. I wonder if it will ever fly.

JWST, an origami on steroids. Tons of moving parts, any could go wrong.

Very disappointed with JWST delay and NG performance. There just doesn't seem to be any incentive for them to complete the mission when they collect $1m a day. While this is a cutting edge science and engineering, project management and creative solutions are not being effectively utilized. The result is a $5B project costing $10B. JWST must be launched. The science more than justifies the cost. Science advances the understanding of the universe improving our quality of life. Military weapons are just money poured down a fiscal black hole.

They should have pulled the project from Northrop-Grumman. It seems all these defense contractors have no sense of finances.

Also I would pay rather we pay for ten of these rather than another Aircraft carrier. Like we don’t have enough!

I see Webb as the most important project in the history of NASA. I don't understand why NASA doesn't call in pros from all departments, and seek help from the European Space Agency and from experts worldwide too keep Webb on schedule. Deep Astronomy and anyone else… please advise me on my lay perspective on this. Does launching from Guyana make that much speed difference? Time lost as is, two more years… where maybe they'd still be ahead if they launch with present schedule from the US instead of Guyana. Could they save a lot of money launching from the USA, or by having Elon Musk launch it with a reusable rocket and save money that way too? Ask CERN what they did focus-wise etc to accelerate and keep accurate their project. I'd think the emphasis would be more than just NASA having some review board going over things — prioritizing. Also the Pentagon got more money, just under 700 billion budget, biggest ever, than they had asked for. Maybe they could divert a billion and it not make any difference. Again all from my lay perspective but wondering what others think here. Thanks for a very good review, much better than the NASA announcement that to me didn't indicate anything about the why's behind the delay.

NASA – the poorest project management EVER. Always changing scope, schedule and cost. So glad that privatization is happening so you lazy and entitled byatches will be out of a job soon. Mostly the PM's…grrrrr so tired of over-runs

Unless there is a MAJOR shift in the political climate after the November election, I don't have confidence that congress will do anything that benefits NASA or science.

Can we trade in another aircraft carrier or two for a second JWST? I'm all for science as a priority over death machines.

    June 30, 2018 at 6:48 am

First without the military there is no USA and there is no NASA. We need the military to be as powerful as possible to protect this exceptional nation that allows this stuff to happen. No other country or two bit dictatorship would ever do this. Take your anti military crap and shove it. It falls on deaf ears here no matter what names you want to call me it won't change my mind . As far as JWST is concerned. If it costs another billion or two to make sure it's right and to be certain it will get there and perform as designed go for it. If it takes two years to be certain it works I don't care. I would rather wait and get it right than rush and see the epic fail. So go ahead call me all the names you want it won't change me or get the JWST up there any faster.

An extra billion dollars for the James Webb Space Telescope is obviously a huge amount of money but that’s still
Only about one seven hundredth of the amount spent on the US military EVERY YEAR. And I would agree it
Is better to spend money on the Telescope than on another aircraft carrier, of which the US has plenty.
However, lessons do need to be learned, notably to try as much as possible to keep cost overruns on other future
Missions to a minimum, and again, as much as possible, to minimize launch delays. However, it is better to delay,
Given the hugely complex technology, than to launch in haste, resulting in the loss of the whole mission. If and
When the Webb is finally launched, I am sure, the results will justify the cost and wait. We just have to be a little more

What makes you think the JWST is essential. Personally I think it is dearly wanted, but essential ? Would not some social problems exhibited by the US also warrant attention ?

  22. Jason Martin

    July 1, 2018 at 5:58 am

Finishing it would be completely pointless if it doesn't even work. Delay it as long as we need. Also, increasing the price tag by $1 billion for a 3 year delay is only $333 million per year, which is only a fraction of the NASA+ESA budget.

Last Ariane 5 launch almost failed. Went badly off course and technically should have been terminated. Payloads lost a lot of fuel getting to the planned orbits.

Why are things so far behind schedule? I am confused by all the delays?

  31. Harry Dirtay

    July 2, 2018 at 1:32 pm

I think people should have focused on building a modular satellite telescope system which we can just keep sending units to enhance, be it for refueling or expansion of mirror array, There is no reason to keep making bigger and bigger things when you can just make a uniform, cheap, and repeatable, continuously expanding structure.

  32. Phil Buglass

    July 2, 2018 at 2:40 pm

Every time I see a report on JWST, I feel it is less and less likely that we will ever see it in operation.   I think it is too complicated by far – the whole 'unfolding' routine – and will not be accessible for repairs…   If Hubble had been away from orbit, it would have remained a piece of space junk.   The ability to fix and upgrade the equipment probably saved NASA's bacon after the focus debacle.   Will NASA survive if this thing gets out there and the heatshield gets stuck?
