To bad Nasa lies about everything and this will never ever,, EVER, happen.

Go JPL! Very cool stuff. I have just one question: What if something comes back that isnt good for us? Is there a contingency plan for that?

This is a HUGE jump in space exploration, I hope NASA and ESA can do this.

Dang! All that for mud and rock samples from mars….

Earth is already overpopulated, just send some people already, how long are the going to milk money from this "Life on Mars" narrative. How many trillion dollars is it worth to increase our statistical confidence that there is no life on Mars by a fraction of a point?

I get it, you don't want to make a mistake and lose funding. Just do what everybody else does – blame somebody else. Make sure you buy some batteries from Tuvalu or something, then say those caught fire and caused the accident. Using the blame game is a fair defence against the public mob.

Jesus that will be a hugely complicated mission (or series of missions). Considering how easy it is for things to go wrong with just sending a probe to mars (and has), something like this seems nearly impossible =(

Cue more "Omg we found fossilised bacteria in a rock! oh wait we changed our minds, because here at nasa we agreed that life on mars is preposterous despite evidence"

Is it possible, to build this small rocket in a way, that wont generate trash on Mars' orbit??
Please, don't do the same thing out there, as we are doing around Earth… do we really need to leave trash everywhere we go?? 🙁

    April 27, 2018 at 5:47 am

Good luck, that will be complicated, but possible. In the end I hope.

Since curiosity can dig and collect sample why not send curiosity v2 + the rocket then curiosity v1 will be sent a command to collect the sample, v2 retrieve the sample back the the lander and lift off back to Earth

I'm no geologist but this seems kinda of a waste to me. What more do we need from mars soil samples that the Curiosity rover hasn't already provided?

Why not send a single human being with a one way ticket to Mars? Plenty of astronauts are willing o do that and think of the achievement level and science that can be done.

    April 27, 2018 at 11:39 am

It seems so silly to break it up into three missions. Just use Falcon Heavy (or SLS if it ever flies…) to send a bigger lander that can drill a sample, load it into a rocket and fire it straight back to Earth. And do it a couple of times to get samples from more locations.

It doesn't have to cost billions and take 15 years either. Set up a race, the first to bring back 1 kg from Mars gets a billion dollar, that's probably enough to get SpaceX and Blue Origin to spend their own money to develop the hardware. A race got us to the Moon and a race will get us a piece of Mars 🙂

whaaat! asome…. but that mean no humans on mars yet?

    drill samples would be nice

  22. Jens Philip Höhmann

Why " back to earth"? The probes have never been on earth yet.

Or wait for BFR and bring back 100 tons.

  24. Dhiman Roy

    April 27, 2018 at 6:33 pm

I think as to dare mighty things has been accomplished by NASA so though it seems crazy but isn't totally impossible.

as I have told you before on many occasion, it is a waste. you still do not have a coherent space plan. your ignorant of planetary structure and their evolution prevent you from developing one. your stupidity prevent you from asking officially and I am not going to tell you until you grow up and ask officially. It will be easier if they hire a Martian to send the samples via FedEx.

  27. JonitFR

    April 27, 2018 at 7:54 pm

Its funny and sad at the same time this secrecy around SSP. Knowing that we were capable of interplanetary travel, crossing vast distances in a matter of minutes, for couple of decades already, not speaking about plethera of other technological advancements not disclosed to public and kept in secrecy under black programs. But the world is changing. And its changing fast. Truths are coming out. People will know. Ridiculed today, accepted tomorrow.

With any luck at all manned missions will beet them there and make this mission profile redundant… for Mars, perhaps if people do beet JPL there they could use some aspects of this mission profile to return samples from another interesting body like a moon orbiting a gas giant perhaps.

    April 28, 2018 at 6:31 am

very conplicated and expensive for rocks. you might as well build a fueling station and landing platform on mars and use that Xb37 to do the ferrying .

  32. Jim Becker

    April 28, 2018 at 1:16 pm

I agree with stimuli, its way to complicated and way to expensive for what you get. Better to spend the time and money on sending man to Mars.

  33. Johannes Snutt

    April 28, 2018 at 1:19 pm

1000 x 4 things can go wrong. Do it please 🙂 Not just for the science but for the achievement.

Too bad the red dragon isn't still slated for development. That would make this a lot simpler

What about a reusable methane-powered rocket and propellant production on the martian service? Oh wait, Musk and SpaceX are already building that.

  36. tinkmarshino

    April 28, 2018 at 11:19 pm

yup I can see it now as the camera pans out to reveal an empty city scape.. the old newspapers rolling down the street and then the camera pans down to show the headlines "mars probe brought back samples to earth. New discoveries made".. and then you notice a small filler article "unknown sickness spreads." new illness breaks out at white sands where the mars probe landed last week……..

    April 29, 2018 at 12:03 am

I would get ride of the second mars rover, just use the first, land the "portable rocket platform" some Kilometres away from the current 2020 rover and use the same original rover to put the samples into the rocket.
yes the main rover may no be able to put the samples in the rocket, but i think is away safer and faster this away, no need for the second rover…
or you can… you know, send a second rover just to repair the main one.
why? because is not easy, and we can do it.

    Good practice for staging…
An important concept for later missions!

Do it NASA…please please do it! We always knew soil sample return was the next step for Mars. Makes us proud as you always do

I hope they send the mars 2020 rover in falcon heavy

Pffft. Lemme guess, this happens in 2030 when SpaceX has been to Mars 10 times?

  42. Johnny Favorite

    April 30, 2018 at 5:30 pm

Needs to be done in 1 Mission. Spacecraft to Transport Lander to Mars. Lander to harvest samples. Rocket built into lander to return sample directly from the Surface of Mars to Earth.

  43. The_MooN_MoNkEy

    April 30, 2018 at 5:32 pm

Mars is already earth! Save your money and take a trip to Devon island ! Simple

  44. Zachary Boone

    May 1, 2018 at 6:35 am

This whole mission can be done with one launch: housing a return vehicle to stay in orbit and a simple lander, land where we know water is present put samples in a solid fuel rocket and dock with the return vehicle, also why not modify the curiously 2020 to directly take samples to the return rocket

  45. Zachary Boone

    May 1, 2018 at 6:36 am

Why go through all this effort if Joe Shmoe can do it 10 years from now with less money and much larger samples on board a bfr

  46. Bryce Charters

    May 1, 2018 at 7:11 pm

Based on the way that NASA missions usually go, this will either be cancelled or SpaceX will do it first with the BFR.

  47. Blue Book

    May 1, 2018 at 9:49 pm

NASA wants to send men to Mars to find water, but can not find water in arid areas on Earth to help people

  48. G Rosa

    May 2, 2018 at 1:07 am

I have a better idea. Save all the money that this complex mission would cost and apply it towards sending people there. Then they can collect samples and bring them back themselves.

There are now five different lines of observational evidence pointing to the existence of Planet Nine,” said Konstantin Batygin, a planetary astrophysicist at Caltech in Pasadena.

Some of these clues relate to the gravitational tug of Planet Nine, which appears to be disturbing the distant Kuiper Belt, which is made up of icy objects and stretches from Neptune out into deep space.

Its believed Planet Nine is a “super-Earth”, the name for a type of large world which appears to be very common in the universe.

Doom-mongers have consistently claimed that a hidden world called Nibiru will crash into Earth.

Nasa has denied this theory, previously writing: “The planet in question, Niburu, doesn’t exist, so there will be no collision.

“The story of Niburu has been around for years (as has the ‘days of darkness’ tale) and is periodically recycled into new apocalyptic fables.”

However, it’s feared Planet Nine will eventually destroy the solar system by causing a devastating “death dance”.

It could one day hurtle through our solar system, sending planets “pinballing” into outer space or plunging into the Sun.

The real story of Nibiru (Planet X)

First we go once again back to the creation story of Mesopotamia

The SUMERIANS always described their Gods as planets starting with Pluto, then Neptune, Uranus, etc., as if they were seeing the planets from a heavenly body (or spacecraft ?) that was entering our solar system from the outside.

The Sumerian seal (below), with the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Moon, Mars, Unknown ( about size of Uranus/Neptune), Jupiter, Saturn, Indeterminate (about size of Mercury), Uranus, Neptune, Pluto.

The SUMERIANS also mentioned a “twelfth” planet called “NIBIRU”, one whose elliptical orbit brought it close to Earth for a brief period about every 3,600 years.

The Sumerians and later also the Babylonians mention about a long time ago in Ancient times in which Nibiru (Marduk), until that time a stranger in our solar system, had a fight in heaven with Tiamat and Kingu. At that time, millions of years ago, the satellites of Nibiru (Marduk) collapsed with Tiamat (a planet at least two times the mass of Earth) and broke it in 2 parts.

In accordance to the theory of Zecharia Sitchin and others, the 2 parts of Tiamat were forced to another orbit around the Sun, One part was broken in small parts and are now called The Asteroid Belt (between Mars and Jupiter) and Asteroids Meteorites and Comets. The other part was forced into his new orbit between Venus and Mars and became the Earth. Kingu became the Moon of the “new planet” Earth. Nibiru was forced into an elliptical orbit around the Sun and its new orbit was from that time on a cycle of 3,600 years around the Sun.

Before I unfold my theory about the timeline of the above events and what happened afterwards I like to honor first the writer of “The Earth Chronicles” Zecharia Sitchin for his great in depth study of the Sumerian and Babylonian history and his theory of which most I agree.
